Maurício Mota

Maurício Mota, Chief Storytelling Officer e co-founder of The Alchemists

Mauricio leads the team responsible for building transmedia narratives for clients like Coca-Cola, Petrobras, TV Globo and Elle Magazine.

He is responsible for bringing the concept of transmedia storytelling and leading innovators in the field to Brazil.

Before founding The Alchemists, he was involved in convergence, innovation and content projects for clients like Danone, Unilever, Nokia, Bradesco, Vivo, Banco Real and Volkswagen.

Mauricio was the first Latin American to participate and speak at the Futures of Entertainment conference at MIT. He was the Latin American jury member at the Festival of Media in Valencia (Spain) and is part of the world board of the Medici Institute, fostering innovative study of the Renaissance.

He began his career as an entrepreneur at the age of 15, when he developed a story-creation platform with writer Sonia Rodrigues. Used in over 4000 schools, it was licensed 8 times and used as a tool to facilitate innovation and creativity for companies and institutions like the UN, Krakt, Petrobras, IG and Oi.

Mark Warshaw

Mark Warshaw, Chief Transmedia Officer, co-founder of The Alchemists

Mark is a writer/producer/director who specializes in interactive storytelling. Before launching The Alchemists, Warshaw developed and produced the transmedia experience for the TV series Heroes.

During his tenure, Heroes 360 became a financial and critical success.  Forester Research has estimated the value of the initiative at $50,000,000 and it won an Emmy for Excellence in Interactive Programming.

Before joining Heroes, Warshaw spent six seasons on the TV series Smallville where he produced all the show’s transmedia content and integrated advertiser initiatives.  The Smallville websites and projects won various awards, helped build a large fan community, and became a major source of revenue for the property.

Warshaw has partnered on projects with Volkswagen, Ford, Sprint, Toyota, Verizon Wireless, Cisco, Johnson & Johnson, TRESemmé, Coca-Cola, Nokia and Nissan.  He has written for television and comic books and produced and directed webisode series for Warner Bros, The CW, NBC, Elle Magazine and the NFL.

He was born and bred in Los Angeles, California with a stopover at the University of Georgia for a degree in Journalism and Mass Communication.

Bárbara R. Mota

Bárbara R. Mota, Chief Culture Officer, partner

Barbara graduated from the Institute of Arts and Communication, University Federal Fluminense (UFF), in Cinema and Audiovisual. For nine years, she has been collaborating on the development of innovations in entertainment and education. For seven, she has been working as script doctor and market analyst for investors.

At Globosat, she was part of the strategic planning of the Department of Programming of Telecine Network. At Oi Futuro Institute, she was responsible for interactivity and engagement strategies for teens, participating in projects to foster the use of new media and technology for social and cultural development. At Net Almanac, she was product manager for the development of an innovative social networking platform for creative writing and learning.
David Charles

David Charles, VP Creative Content, partner

Whether it’s creating full blown integrated campaigns, directing or conceiving interactive experiences for top global brands, storytelling and innovation are at the heart of everything David does.

After a four-year stint working at a top interactive agency in São Paulo, David moved to San Francisco and worked at Butler, Shine, Stern and Partners writing campaigns for MINI and Lucas Arts (most notably The Force Unleashed video game launch). Shortly after, he became a Creative Director/Writer at the Digital Agency of The Decade — AKQA. While there, he worked on digital campaigns for Nike, McDonald’s, Sprite, Visa, Gap and Xbox. Some of his most noted campaigns were the Pandora ROVR for Avatar, Nike Soccer, Halo and Gears of War.

In 2010 he moved to Los Angeles to become a Creative Director at 72andSunny where he worked on Nike, Air New Zealand and on the complete rebrand of 90′s fashion icon PacSun, which generated the highest sales the company had seen in 5 years.

David also writes graphic novels, directs music videos and documentaries and currently lives in Santa Monica with his wife Melinda, daughter Karson and two deranged chihuahuas – Amelie and Lolo.

Flourish Klink

Flourish Klink, Chief Participation Officer

Flourish leads the Fan Culture Division at The Alchemists, where she helps our clients to map and implement fan culture and audience development strategies.

She writes transformative works of fiction – both interactive and non-interactive – and studies fandom and popular culture. She is also a lecturer in the Comparative Media Studies program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and earned a S.M. in that same program; before that, she earned a B.A. in religion from Reed College.
By the time she was 14, she had helped co-found FictionAlley.org, a major Harry Potter fanfiction website. Most recently, she has been secretary of the board for HPEF Inc., which puts on educational conferences centering around Harry Potter.
Albert Page

Albert Page, SVP of Development and Production

Albert Page is tasked with seeking and discovering new properties, stories and characters that are ripe for transmedia storytelling and franchise building.

Prior to joining The Alchemists, Albert worked for Mandeville Films, a feature film production company based out of Walt Disney Studios. Mandeville Films is one of the film industry’s leading production companies and Albert served as Senior Vice President of Development and Production.
In this job, he supervised a wide slate of films through the various stages of development and production including initial conception, story development, packaging, physical production, marketing and release.
He was responsible for a slate of approximately 25 projects set up with various studios and financiers including films such as The Proposal, Eight Below, Surrogates and the Academy Award Best Picture nominee The Fighter.  As a result of his film background, Albert believes that the core of a fulfilling transmedia experience for fans is built around quality storytelling, engaging mythology, strong characters and accessible emotions.
Darin Mark

Darin Mark, Head of Story Development

Is a native Los Angeles writer specialized in film, television and transmedia storytelling.

Darin has sold original screenplays and written feature film adaptations for Warner Brothers Independent, Essential Pictures, Castle Rock Entertainment and Walt Disney Feature Animation Studios.  Exploring Television and Transmedia spaces, Darin has written original content for Elle Magazine, Coca-Cola Brazil and Fishbowl Worldwide Media.

He graduated Summa Cum Laude in English, Creative Writing from the University of Colorado, Boulder and earned his Master of Fine Arts degree in Screenwriting from USC’s School of Cinematic Arts.

Priti Agrawal

Priti Agrawal, Director of Story Development/ Chief Publishing Officer

She is entrusted with leading the development processes of all the Intellectual Properties and franchises for both The Alchemists and its clients (such as brands and studios).

She has a keen focus on exploring the future of books and their impact on education.

She is a graduate in Global Media and Communications from London School of Economics (LSE) and University of Southern California (USC). Very few people know it, but Priti went to Xavier School in India. Nobody knows if that’s the same school from X-Men, but we think it’s cool.

Dawn Thomas

Dawn Thomas, VP Development

Dawn is a former lawyer, Wall Street banker, digital brand strategist and creative director with an educational background in Corporate Law (J.D.), Media Finance (M.S.) and Advertising (B.S.). She is obsessed with aliens, superheroes of all types and time travel.

Dawn began her career with Creative Artists Agency working in the Cable TV, Film Finance and Talent departments. She then expanded her storytelling experience as a Senior Development Executive at Overbrook Entertainment (a Sony-based production shingle run by partners Will Smith and James Lassiter.) In this role, Dawn collaborated with writers, directors and creative staff to develop content for film, television and transmedia. Some of the exciting projects Dawn has developed include THE SECRET LIFE OF BEES, LAKEVIEW TERRACE, I AM LEGEND and HANCOCK. Working with studios and agencies around town, she has managed a slate of over 25 feature films at a variety of budget levels and covering a wide range of genres.

Along with her responsibilities at Overbrook, Dawn served as Head of Creative Affairs & Production for 100% Womon Films formed with Jada Pinkett Smith to develop genre and family based content including kid-centric transmedia, publishing and television. Under this shingle, she developed and co-created over 15 television projects of which four were sold to various networks including ABC, CBS and Disney.

Passionate about telling stories across mediums, Dawn developed and produced the transmedia campaign for the WB film, “I AM LEGEND”. The campaign included a series of motion comics (published by WB Home Video), an online multi-player role playing game, Machinima game trailers, a series of live action webisodes, a social media campaign and a comic book series published by DC Comics/Vertigo.

Alexandra Varassin

Alexandra Varassin, Chief Connection Officer

10 years of experience in branding, marketing and communication.

Began her professional experience in the Ministry of Culture where she majored in Lei Rouanet and Audiovisual, supporting cultural producers and NGOs in project development.
She worked in brand consultancy at Future Brand and Thymus Branding in Innovation and Brand Language projects.
In the last five years has been in the agencies Ogilvy & Mather and CASA / JWT, devoting herself to the Strategic Planning and Communication of global and regional brands for Coca-Cola, Kraft, Burger King, Johnson & Johnson, among others.
